Garage Roller Door Automation Using Sonoff 12V Devices

Peter Harvie

You can build this whole project for less than $50

The reasons for undertaking this project and using the elements within it include:

  • I wanted a simple way to automatically close my garage door if it was accidentally left open, but be able to override the function.

  • I wanted to be able to remotely open and close my garage door via the internet for couriers, etc.

  • To have a backup roller door remote controller should my keyring version fail.

  • I am not a programmer so I look for ways to KISS - and cheap - and reliable.

  • Everything operates only using 12V power.

Design Brief - Garage Open Automatic Closing System

  1. Test IF the roller/garage door is OPEN

  2. Send NOTIFICATION warning IF OPEN

  3. Send NOTIFICATION alert when CLOSED again

  4. Automatically CLOSE the door after (nominal) 120s IF left OPEN

  5. Can be tested by Google Assistant for ON/OFF (open or closed) state

  6. Limit the possibility of false open door triggers

  7. Use cheap parts and out-of-the-box hardware and software solutions

Design Brief - Garage Remote Control

  1. Toggle my Merlin EVO850 roller door MANUAL DOOR CONTROL OPEN, STOP or CLOSED as required remotely via the internet.

  2. Use cheap parts and out-of-the-box hardware and software solutions
